During the Clone Wars Era, each Clone or Clone Trooper developed their own personality and traits which distinguish themselves from one another. They often had customized armor, combat skills, and hairstyles as well as having different facial features such as tattoos, scars, and cybernetic eyes.
Captain Rex often liked to show his true personality while on the battlefield.

It wasn't until Anakin Skywalker first met and nicknamed ARC Lieutenant Alpha 17 during the battle of Jambiim that nicknaming clones would prove to be a much more efficient strategy for distinguishing individual clones as well as larger units. In addition to being a tactical advantage, individualized names allowed the clones to express themselves more, thus humanizing them.

Commander Cody was the first official Clone to be nicknamed within the Star Wars franchise, but ARC Lieutenant Alpha was the very first Clone to be named within the chronological events of the Clone Wars.
Officers are the only Clone Troopers who were permitted to customized their armor as a means of distinguishing them from the average soldier.
Officers like Commander Colt were the ones who customized their armor.
